Peekskill becomes a work of art this weekend
September 14, 2006

North County News
By Neil Ira Needleman

The Peekskill Project opens this weekend!!! (And it's so exciting, it deserves every one of those exclamation marks!) After many months of planning and hard work by more than 100 artists and 16 curators, this annual art mega-event is about to take a dramatic leap from the preparation phase into (and onto) the streets, plazas, parks, stores, galleries, and museums of Peekskill. And when it does, watch out. In fact, don't just watch, you should also be prepared to open your ears and listen because you'll want to hear the music, stories, and performances that are an important part of the Peekskill Project. But don't plan on simply watching and listening, some of the works actively solicit your physical participation-such as rock skipping on the Hudson River.

As you will see this weekend, this isn't art that's made to hang idly on museum walls and collect dust. This is site-specific art that involves and inspires an audience while transforming the City of Peekskill into a spectacular playground for creativity. There's something for everyone, from young to post-young, and from art lover to curious browser. But no matter who you are, the work in the Peekskill Project will elicit a wide range of reactions, from "I couldn't stop laughing" to "That really touched me deep inside" to "Hmmmmm, I'm going to have to think about that one." What's in store for you when you make your way to Peekskill this weekend for the big opening? This schedule of events and performances gives you an idea of the rampant creativity you'll encounter.
